Gardasil, Merck Sharp & Dohme’s cervical cancer vaccine caused an uproar in 2006 when it was marketed to girls and women aged 9 to 26. It is estimated that over 25 million young women in the US have received the vaccine which was designed to prevent 4 types of HPV (Human papillomavirus types 6, 11, 16 and 18) which are associated with the risk of genital warts and cause about 70 percent of all cervical cancers.

The vaccine manufacturer’s recommendations have also been extended to boys. But one may (or may not if you read this blog) be surprised to know that there are questions being raised about the safety of Gardasil. A constellation of auto-immune disease symptoms (over 16,000 reports) including: Rheumetoid arthritis and lupus have been reported in otherwise healthy girls and there have been 50 deaths. Well 16,000 adverse events out of approximately 25 million isn’t a lot at all so we’ll just give Merck a pass on that one, shall we? Unless of course your daughter or loved one is one of the 16,000.

Questions have been raised as to whether Gardasil was tested adequately for safety in girls under age 15. Shocking, we’re aware. Not that it matters but…the first quart profits for Gardasil were $390 million. Gardasil is predicted to jump to $3 billion in profits by 2012.

YAZ Litigation

The newest litigation on the mass tort front continues to center upon birth control. Specifically Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol), Yasmin and Ocella. These 4th generation (yes, pills have generations too) birth control pills were lauded for their effectiveness and initial advertisements (for which the FDA issued a warning to Bayer) suggesting their role in treating PMS.

The Yaz label has underwent a number of revisions to add the numerous warnings associated with the use of YAZ including, but not limited to, venous and arterial thrombotic and thromboembolic events (such as myocardial infarction, thromboembolism, stroke), hepatic neoplasia, gallbladder disease, and
hypertension. Moreover, YAZ has additional risks because it contains the progestin, drospirenone.

Drospirenone has antimineralocorticoid properties which can lead to hyperkalemia in high risk patients, which may result in potentially serious heart and health problems. Women taking YAZ must be concerned about the drug interactions that could increase potassium, in addition to the drug interactions common to all combination oral contraceptives. Consolidated litigation is currently in the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia. IF YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU WERE HARMED BY YAZ PLEASE CONTACT OUR OFFICE TODAY.

Next up, MasXtreme (Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like)

Natural Wellness is warning consumers not to purchase or consume the product known as MasXtreme, Lot# 911035. This product which is being marketed as a dietary supplement (A nod is as good as a wink to a blind bat) contains undeclared amounts of Aildenafil, as well as the drug Phentolamine which is an alpha-adrenergic blocker. Aildenafil is close in structure to Sildenafil and is expected to possess a similar pharmacological and adverse event profile. Sildenafil is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in an FDA-approved drug that is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). This may pose a threat to consumers because Aildenafil may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. Common side effects of Phentolamine include arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) and tachycardia (rapid heart beat).

MasXtreme is sold in blister packs containing one (1) capsule. The product is distributed Nationwide by Natural Wellness Inc. This product is being promoted for increasing desire and sexual performance. The product is sold without medical prescription.

Consumers who have purchased MasXtreme tablets (And you know who you are) are urged to immediately discontinue their use and return the product to their place of purchase or directly to Natural Wellness Inc. at 440 S Federal Hwy, Suite 107, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. Consumers with questions regarding this recall may contact the company at 954-570-6662 Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm. Consumers who have purchased this product and have medical concerns should consult with their health care providers.

Adverse reaction or quality problems experienced with the use of this product may be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online, by regular mail, or by fax. Online: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm1. Regular Mail: use postage-paid, pre-addressed Form FDA 3500 available at www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm2. Mail to address on the pre-addressed form. Fax: 1-800-FDA-0178.

This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Spice Barn is recalling two lots of Black Pepper due to the possibility of contamination with Salmonella. Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
Turkey Hill Dairy of Conestoga, Pa., is recalling its 1.5 qt.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue, although people who have allergies to almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. The product is safe for consumption by consumers without nut allergies.

All affected containers would have been purchased by consumers after January 28, 2010.

Source: BBC Health; PNAS (no laughing) Journal

The Journal for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science has published a study on lingering tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs). Researchers in Berkeley, California (say no more Berkeley) have found “substantial” concentrations of toxins upon substances exposed to tobacco products.

What sort of substances? Clothing, furniture and wallpaper for starters. The researchers have suggested that third hand smoke is an unappreciated health hazard and have called for a ban on home and vehicular smoking -where TSNA’s can concentrate in unhealthful amounts. The largest at risk group? Young children who touch and put everything in their mouths.

The director of the Brit smoker’s lobby group Forest (Freedom Organization for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco) (Yes, everyone has a lobby group nowadays!) was not-surprisingly skeptical, referring to the study as “propaganda dressed up as science.” Oh, lest I be accused of bias, they have a website too. http://www.forestonline.org/output/home.aspx

So is the risk of third hand smoke overstated? Well, maybe. However, one should consider that over 4000 chemical compounds are created by burning a cigarette, many of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia are all present in cigarette smoke. 43 known carcinogens are in mainstream smoke, sidestream smoke, or both. For a complete list of toxins in tobacco, go to http://quitsmoking.about.com/cs/nicotineinhaler/a/cigingredients.htm

And bear in mind that way back when asbestos was hailed as the new “wonder substance” finding it’s way into everything including bakelite jewelery (look it up, I’m not lying) it was felt to be safe. Now years later we know that asbestos fibers can cling to everything, much like, well, third hand smoke.

In 1998, Dr. Andrew Wakefield’s vaccination study appeared in the Brit Medical Journal Lancet. The study was seized upon by those of the anti-vaccination set.

The problem? His research has been discredited for a number of reasons including the he is reported to have paid his son’s friends to obtain blood samples while they attended his birthday party and the fact that he was working for attorneys hired by parents pursuing legal action for autism they believe was caused by the MMR (Measles Mumps and Rubella) vaccine.

Dr. Wakefield, who now lives (and works) in the US was, “Extremely disappointed” by the recent rulings of the General Medical Counsel against him. The study, which was later retracted by Lancet, has been cited as a critical factor in causing the plummet of MMR vaccination rates and the expected rise in new cases of measles since 2005.
