I wear my sunglasses at night…

Source:  BBC Health

Just in time for the end of the beach season, a recent British College of Optometrists poll reveals that nearly 1/3 of parents in Britain do not purchase sunglasses for their children.  Of the 2/3 who do, they appear more concerned with cost than actual eye protection.

Children and adults with light colored eyes (non-brown) are most at risk for sun damage. Those who know what it’s like to be behind blue eyes should always wear sunglasses the optometrists warn.  Risks of ocular sun exposures include cataracts, macular degeneration and cancer.  And wearing a set of cheap sunglasses (how many musical references are there?) is worse than not wearing any as they allow the pupil to dilate without any protection.

So look for quality sunglasses, with the CE mark and ensure a good fit. Curiously, the optometrists still have mixed opinions about UV protection so might as well throw it in there.  No go and soak up the sun and tell everyone.
